Synthetic turf gets blamed for problems that actually start below it. A base that isn't excavated, graded and compacted properly will telegraph every low spot and soft patch straight up through the turf — as ripples, puddling after rain, or a section that just feels spongy underfoot.
Weed barrier goes down before the turf, not as an afterthought — skip it and the first thing that comes up through the seams is exactly what the turf was supposed to replace. Drainage matters just as much in the desert as anywhere else: an occasional downpour on ground that doesn't drain will sit on top of turf that has nowhere to send it.
Infill is the other piece that gets overlooked. The right infill, at the right depth, is what keeps turf blades standing up and feeling like grass instead of matting down into a flat green mat within a season.
